Delhi Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze Post Celebrations
Tuesday brought citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling severely hazardous air that was classified as the "severe" category.
Alarming Pollution Measurements
Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an air quality index over 500, which represents 10x the safe level recommended by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x above safe limits.
Firecracker Prohibition and New Policy Shifts
Since 2020, officials had enforced a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous haze that blankets the metropolis as the cold season approaches.
Yet recently, the recently formed city administration petitioned the highest court to request a relaxation of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically questioned by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".
Judicial Verdict and Reality
Much to the frustration of medical and ecological campaigners, judges approved the proposal, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during specific periods throughout the festival.
Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the city, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.
Numerous recording stations throughout the city recorded pollution reaching highest levels around midnight to the most severe readings observed during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Regional Implications
The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to deteriorating air quality in Lahore on contaminants traveling from neighboring India following the events.
Chronic Pollution Crisis
Extremely elevated levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have continued as a major challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
During the festival period, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the worst records ever documented in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the globally most contaminated city.
Diverse Contamination Factors
This crisis in the city is resulting from a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in neighbouring areas of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the city as colder air sets in.
Medical and Economic Toll
The economic and health impact on the nearly 33 million inhabitants calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple studies.
This pollution leads to elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can potentially cause malignancies.
Air quality crisis is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 premature fatalities per year in the city.
